At Cloney Audio we are interested in all aspects of high fidelity
reproduction. Since the demise of the traditional valve radio, we
have been sadly missing that big round sound that, for many of us,
was our main source of music while growing up. Modern transistor
radios, by and large, sound pretty dire so there's a very definite
need for a decent radio at an affordable price.
Enter the TIVOLI RADIO. This little gem has been picking up
rave reviews in the US and in the high end audio press at that.
What you get is a quite miniature package but one quite unlike
those emanating from the orient. The casework is wooden, available
like the fascia in a range of colour finishes. There's a band
selector, volume knob and a beautifully weighted aluminum finished
tuning dial. Also visible on the front panel is the perforated
grille behind which is secreted a special three inch long throw
speaker drive unit.
And so to the sound. In a word glorious. Warmth and clarity
that belies the size of the box. Suffice it to say that initial
positive impressions can be fully confirmed. The sound of the
radio on good quality broadcasts really is high fidelity, with
striking naturalness. Of course it is inevitably a little rolled
off at the frequency extremes, but in a very pleasant way. And
like the legendary LS3/5a minimonitor, there is a little
equalisation of the upper bass that gives a deceptive and pleasing
fullness to the bottom end. Finally, by comparison with competitor
products, the Tivoli has an uncanny ability to increase volume
rather than simply getting loud and raggy. And it really can fill
a room with sound.
The Model One of Tivoli Radio has recently been joined by the
Model Two. This is a stereo version of the Model One. Essentially,
the Model Two comprises a case similar to the Model One, together
with a second speaker for stereo, housed in a case similar to the
model one. This means that you can separate the two speakers for
proper stereo. The Model Two also includes source switching. This
means that the Model Two can act as the heart of a complete mini hi-fi system. And to keep everything compact and gorgeous, Tivoli will
be introducing a matching CD player.
The most recent introduction to the Tivoli range
is the PAL. The PAL is a Tivoli that you can take anywhere and
everywhere. The PAL is a Model One undressed, with its wooden
slipcase replaced by an ultra durable plastic covering. This makes
the PAL fairly resistant to the elements. And because the PAL is
powered from its own built rechargeable in battery pack, you really
can take the great sound of Tivoli anywhere.
